Nathan Dillon has been teaching guitar
and, by extension, musical appreciation
for over twelve years.
“I seek to
pass on my knowledge of
the guitar in particular,
but also to engage each
student's curiosity and
need to understand and
grow as a person and as
a musician.”
Nathan began teaching
and learning guitar
simultaneously.
“When I first
began taking lessons I
would go to my lesson,
then come home and show
my friends what I had
learned. Learning and
teaching guitar have

never been separate in my mind.
One informs the other and I learn as
much from my students as they do
from me.”
For the last four years, Nathan has been teaching rock band classes both at Bank Street and Catherine Cook School. Recently he has expanded his rock band program into more Chicagoland schools. “Rock band classes provide students a better understanding of playing in a group while giving them a chance to learn basic technique on a variety of instruments, depending on their individual tastes.” In 2004 Nathan began teaching filmmaking classes,
guitar lessons and rock band classes at the
prestigious Bank Street School for
Children. Since moving to Chicago in 2007, Nathan has established himself at Catherine Cook School, Nettelhorst School and the Old Town School of Folk Music. Many schools are showing interest in creating a rock band program. As the program grows, more and more children are learning the joy of playing and learning in a (rock and roll) group. “All of the schools I have been lucky enough to work in are filled with creative, inventive teachers and everyone is looking for ways to share their excitement and knowledge. ,” Nathan says.
“I know I am giving back to
the community what was so graciously
shared by my teachers. Each lesson and each class I teach is a microcosm of growing and
learning that takes place every day
in children's lives. I take my roll
as educator very seriously, while at
the same time allowing children to
play and grow in a comfortable and
ever-expanding world of creative
musical activities.”
